Research Interests

For most organisms, the resources needed to sustain life and reproduce are distributed in space, thus the study of spatial navigation and cognition explores the cues and strategies that organisms use to survive. Dr. Buzzelli’s research focuses on using invertebrates to explore the evolutionary underpinnings of spatial navigation and cognition in highly conserved species such as terrestrial crustaceans which dates back more than 350 million years. The targets for his research involve identifying the sensory system or systems that terrestrial crustaceans use to navigate and isolating which cue properties these organisms use to solve spatial problems. Future studies will seek to determine if these organisms can learn and theoretical explanations for their ability to locate targets in laboratory environments. Dr. Buzzelli remains open to other areas of research and has been involved with research in the areas of Chiari Malformation, cognitive again, and schizophrenia treatment.
