Student Awards and Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the Department of Psychology, a number of scholarships are available for students who are majoring in psychology. Scholarships are competitive and each have separate eligibility requirements and require individual applications.

Here are descriptions of the currently available scholarships for undergraduate students. Selection of the recipients is made by the Psychology Department Undergraduate Scholarship Committee unless indicated otherwise in the description of the scholarship.

Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships (Faculty Nominated)

Outstanding Senior in Psychology Award

The Outstanding Senior in Psychology Award is given to a graduating senior in the department of Psychology. The recipient receives a plaque from the department, which is presented at the Spring Psychology department graduate recognition ceremony. Fall and Spring graduates are eligible to receive this award. Nominations must come from a faculty member in the department of Psychology (Application due April 3rd).

The Psychology Foundation Account Award

This $250* award will be made to the senior psychology major who produces the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Thesis. The award will be given at the Spring Psychology department graduate recognition ceremony. Fall and Spring graduates are eligible to apply. Nominations must be made by the student’s thesis advisor (Application due April 3rd).

The Carol Smith Ripley Scholarship

This merit and need-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior with a commitment to the study of psychology who plans to pursue a career in the field. Preference will be given to those applicants who are planning a career in psychological research as well as to those students with a demonstrated financial need. Nominations must be from a faculty member in the department of Psychology who has worked with the applicant in some sort of research capacity (e.g., the student served as a member of the faculty member’s research lab). In addition to the faculty nomination form, the student applicant should submit a form describing his or her financial need. This scholarship is typically valued at $1200* ($600 per semester applied toward tuition and fees).

Statement of Need

Psi Chi Engagement Scholarship

This merit based scholarship is awarded to a Psychology major who is a new or current ECU Psi Chi chapter and who also plans to pursue a career in the field. Eligible individuals are new or current Psi Chi members with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and in Psychology. This scholarship is typically valued at $500 ($250 per semester applied toward tuition and fees).

The ECU Psi Chi Advisor selects nominees for this scholarship.


Undergraduate Scholarships (Student Nominated)

The Earl and Norma Childers Scholarship

This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a psychology major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated commitment to a career in psychology. The scholarship is typically valued at $300* ($150 per semester applied toward tuition and fees).

The Miller-Moore Undergraduate Scholarship in Psychology

This merit and need-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior psychology major who has demonstrated academic excellence in the field of psychology and has a demonstrated financial need. The award is valued at $2000* to be applied to tuition and fees for the senior year.

The University Book Exchange Scholarship in Psychology

This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who has shown academic excellence in the field of psychology. The award is valued at $500* ($250 per semester to be applied to tuition and fees).

The Walker Mayo Undergraduate Scholarship in Psychology

This need-based scholarship is awarded to a psychology major who has a demonstrated financial need and who has demonstrated academic excellence in the field of psychology. The award is valued at $2000* to be applied to tuition and fees ($1000 per semester).

*Dollar values on all scholarships may vary as they are dependent upon the current balances in the specific scholarship fund at the time of the award.
