Research Interests

My research activities focus on online teaching, with an emphasis on the role of metacognitive processes. Ongoing studies are designed to investigate the relationship between metamemory for course content and changes in course performance across a full semester of instruction. Metamemory is one’s conscious knowledge of how much one knows/remembers about a topic. It is common for students to overestimate how much they know, resulting in overconfidence in their understanding and under-preparation for learning assessments. Thus, a primary goal of this line of research is to determine how best to re-calibrate students’ metamemory judgments and thereby bring their expectations about class performance in line with their actual preparedness.
